She accompanied Lisa, even taking them to the park – where Lisa sat silently on a bench in memory of her wife. That image was like a knife piercing deep into her emotions: the woman sat in front of a plaque commemorating the death of the person who was living right next to her.

The secrets revealed one by one made Lisa feel like she was falling into a maze. She wanted to understand and escape the spiral of lies. As for Becky, in the midst of a tangle of guilt, she could only scream: “You have to believe me, it’s all to keep you and your child safe!” But the more Becky explained, the more distant Lisa felt, as if the two of them were separated by an invisible wall that could never be broken.
