Bernie – who seemed to be on the sidelines of the story, now becomes the factor that ignites the chaos.

She does not silently watch from afar: during the long night, Bernie joins in, throwing “bait” of suspicion between Becky and Theo.

She sends anonymous messages to Theo, making him believe that Becky is sneaking around with someone else, or keeping a big secret.

Bernie also takes advantage of a few moments of Becky dormancy (deep sleep, tiredness) to sneak into the apartment, placing fake evidence – photos, messages, hidden calls – to “prove” Becky is dishonest.

One time, Theo receives a “suspicious” email from an unknown account, in which Becky is accused of taking money from a mysterious person to use against Theo. Scene: Theo opens the email with trembling hands, eyes wide open, the screen light flickering in the darkness – then he rushes to Becky’s house to confront her. The door is ajar, the room is dim, on the table are flash drives and papers — Bernie left them ready. When Becky wakes up, she is completely confused: she doesn’t know how to explain.

Bernie also manipulates Lisa, whispering in Lisa’s ear that Becky is cheating on her — sowing doubt between Becky and Lisa. Lisa — who is the closest person to Becky — is drawn into the psychological game. In a spoiler scene, Lisa is caught “getting close” to Becky on the sofa, but Roy suddenly appears and breaks the scene — creating a buzz, public opinion.

Bernie also “joins hands” with DI Costello in many shady deals: she provides information, even cooperates to pressure Becky. The documents in Costello’s hands can make Becky fall if she doesn’t cooperate. Bernie uses the evil in the echo — not rushing into a fight, but subtle manipulation, breaking trust, sowing doubt — and turning Theo into the “bait”.
