Coronation Street Spoiler: David in despair: When Corrie’s strongest man collapsed because of the three words ‘mass on neck’
If the previous episode was a shock to Shona, the next episode was a “blow” for David Platt – who always tried to be the pillar.
Corrie turned him from a man full of determination into a shaky soul, when the doctor requested an emergency re-examination to determine the nature of the “abnormal mass” on the fetus.
David could not sleep, kept walking around the house all night, while Shona tried to pretend to be calm.
The short conversations between the two were like knives cutting into the hearts of the audience:

– “I believe our baby will be fine, right David?”
– “…I believe. But what if it’s not?”
The next morning, the two returned to the hospital. The ultrasound machine worked again, but there was no better news. The director used cold lighting tones, light but haunting background music, making the audience clearly feel the psychological pressure crushing them.

In the final scene, David walks out into the hallway, clutching the ultrasound scan. He doesn’t cry, but his eyes are hollow and lifeless. At the Rovers Return pub, when his friends ask him, he simply replies: “There’s a mass on our baby’s neck.” – a short sentence but as heavy as the sky falling.
This is the typical Corrie tragedy: no tears needed, just a look is enough to make viewers feel heartbroken. And it seems that Shona and David’s journey to save their child has only just begun – a journey that will test the limits of their love, their faith, and their courage.
