As Bernie Winter’s secret son and a young police officer under DI Costello, Kit initially looks up to his boss with respect, seeing him as a role model and mentor.

However, the deeper he delves into cases like Lauren Bolton and Tia Wardley, the more he discovers inexplicable flaws in the files that cannot be explained by “professional error.”

He begins to uncover altered reports, deliberately overlooked details, mismatched timelines, and ignored witnesses.

Everything seems to be rigged so that a specific suspect disappears from view: Costello. The climax comes when Kit stumbles upon a seemingly insignificant clue – a detail about Becky’s movements, a statement contradicting official records, or a piece of information about Tia that only an insider could have orchestrated. From there, he begins to piece the whole picture together and realizes that Costello always appears “at the right time and place” whenever the truth is about to be revealed.

The more he investigates, the more Kit is drawn into an internal conflict: if he continues, he will have to confront his direct superior, a person who holds power not only within the police department but also throughout the entire system. But if he stops, he will become part of the complicit silence. The image of Kit sitting alone in his room, flipping through files, comparing each line of text with his memories and accounts, is the perfect scene to portray the “bare-handed hero” in a rotten system.
