When Dr. Rolf – Salem’s “mad genius” – reappears with his controversial resurrection technology, EJ immediately seeks him out.

He believes that if he can save Shawn, Belle will forgive him, and he can atone for his past mistakes.

Despite Marlena, Rafe, and Johnny’s warnings, EJ coldly replies, “If death can’t take the one I love, then I’ll take the dead back from the hands of death.”

The scene of EJ entering Dr. Rolf’s lab, the blue neon lights illuminating his determined face, is one of the most memorable moments of the week. Rolf sets a condition: “You can save Shawn, but you must sacrifice a part of your own soul.” EJ accepts without hesitation. A drop of his blood fell onto the operating table – and that was the moment the line between man and demon in EJ officially blurred.

Spoilers reveal that Shawn’s “resurrection” wasn’t a smooth process. His body convulsed, his heart beat then stopped, leaving Rolf and EJ sweating profusely. At the last minute, when Belle entered, softly calling, “Shawn, if you can hear me, come back,” Shawn’s eyes slowly opened. EJ smiled, but the audience knew: in Salem, no one returns unscathed. “Resurrected Shawn” – he could be a hero, or a new nightmare awaiting Belle.
