Kristen is surprised that Brady agrees to take her daughter. But the short-lived joy quickly gives way to tension. When Rachel leaves for a moment, Brady and Kristen have a private conversation. Kristen can’t contain her anger: “If it weren’t for you, I would only have to serve three years in prison. Now Rachel has to live six years without a mother.” That accusation is like a knife piercing Brady’s conscience.

What the audience doesn’t expect is that Rachel overheard part of the story. If she knew that Brady had contributed to her mother’s double-length prison sentence, Rachel’s trust in her father would be shattered. The final shot of Rachel sitting silently, her eyes red, sowed a worry in the audience: would she still see Brady as a loving father, or would she turn away out of a sense of betrayal?
